JOS VERSTAPPEN

Biography

Like many of today's grand prix drivers Jos cut his teeth in the
European kart scene. He began racing in cars in 1992 when he took
victory in the Dutch Opel Lotus championship.

He went on to dominate the German Formula 3 championship in 1993, winning the prestigious Marlboro Masters Formula 3 race at his home circuit of Zandvoort in the process. At this stage of his career Jos was the hottest young talent in Formula 1 and was courted by McLaren and Benetton as a test driver.

He choose Benetton and the test deal became race deal after JJ Lehto broke his neck in pre-season testing at Silverstone. In all honesty it was a case of right place, wrong time for Jos as he struggled to come to terms with driving a rookie F1 season as Michael Schumacher's team mate. His most memorable moment of that season came with the
infamous Hockenheim pit fire from which he was lucky to escape
uninjured.

A disastrous part-season with Simtek in 1995 followed, which ground to a halt when the team ran out of cash. He had some promising races for Arrows in 1996 until Damon Hill replaced him at the end of the year.

He ended up at Tyrrell for 1997. He was equally matched with Mika Salo but seemed to spend more time off the track than the Finn. Jos' most recent F1 experience came with Stewart when he replaced
Jan Magnussen in 1998. However, the car was off the pace and he was replaced at the end of the season.
