Juan Pablo Montoya, or the new messiah, as he is known to some, is set to make a big impact on Formula 1 in 2001.
Many of the Colombian's supporters believe that the 1999 ChampCar champion is the driver to knock Michael Schumacher off his perch as Formula 1's benchmark performer.
Montoya's combination of speed, bravery and aggression is what sets him apart. He's earned himself the reputation of being an
uncompromising racer in ChampCars, and he's unlikely to be shy of
mixing it with the likes of Schumacher.
However, some fear that Montoya's combative driving style could see him come a cropper in F1. ChampCars are more robust and less edgy than modern F1 cars and the last driver to wow the States lost the plot when he returned to F1. Remember Alex Zanardi?
But Montoya should be different. He's younger and more willing to change his driving style to suit F1 than Zanardi. He's also fabulously fast and for many, his arrival is the most exciting thing about 2001.
Montoya's also untypical in that he isn't scared to shoot from the hip. Most F1 drivers are too frightened of upsetting corporate sponsors or the powers that be to say anything of real interest; Montoya's habit of speaking his mind should prove a breath of fresh air.
His film star looks will also help boost his media profile and introduce some much-needed glamour to F1.
