NICK HEIDFELD
Biography
This talented young German survived a trying debut season in 2000, after a miserable a year spent with Prost.
The car was hopeless and Heidfeld had to cope with going from dominating the F3000 scene to propping up the back of the F1 grid. After failing to score a point he fell out with Alain Prost and opted to join Sauber for 2001.
He found 2000 doubly-hard because, as a product of the McLaren Mercedes driver programme, Heidfeld is used to winning.
He began racing in 1994 after a successful karting career. In his first year of car racing he dominated his class in the German Formula Ford championship, taking eight wins out of nine.
Heidfeld was the overall runner-up in Formula Ford in '95. He then graduated to the German Formula 3 championship, taking third place in the standings in 1996.
He went two places better in 1997, taking the championship previously won by Michael Schumacher and Jarno Trulli. He graduated to Formula 3000 in 1998 with West Competiton, where he pushed eventual champion Juan Pablo Montoya hard for the title win.
During 1998 and 1999 he also acted as the official McLaren test driver, completing thousands of miles in the best car in Formula 1.
