Marques was the last driver to sign-up for the 2001 F1 grid and will have been chosen purely on the basis of the budget he could bring to Minardi.
That said, he is not a complete mug behind the wheel. He is a veteran of the international racing scene at the ripe old age of 25, and already has F1 experience from a previous stint with Minardi.
He began racing in F3000 at the age of 18 in 1994 and took a victory in the championship at Estoril one year later. He joined Minardi for the end of the 1996 season and then replaced the Jarno Trulli at the team half-way through'97, when the Italian moved to Prost.
A year off ensued as no further F1 opportunities came up after which the Brazilian decided to make the move to ChampCars. He raced for the world famous Penske team in 1999 before heading up the works Swift outfit last season.
Paul Stoddart wanted his other driver to have F1 experience bearing in mind Alonso's rookie status. With 12 races under his belt Marques fits the bill and with his experience in other international formulas he should prove to be a safe pair of hands.
