The 25-year-old Brazilian has been given his big break by Jaguar after impressing team bosses with his testing for the team over the past couple of seasons.
He is a graduate of Jackie Stewart's famed 'staircase of talent' which has also produced David Coulthard and newly-crowned ChampCar king Gil de Ferran.
Luciano raced for Stewart Racing in Formula 3 in 1998 and 1999,
finishing runner-up in his second year ahead of Jenson Button.
He signed a full-time test deal with Jaguar at the beginning of the year after setting some impressive times for Stewart in previous
outings, and was present at most 2000 grand prix in his role of
reserve driver.
He followed in the footsteps of F3 rival Jenson Button by making his F1 debut in the Austrian Grand Prix after Eddie Irvine fell ill. He drove a steady and sensible race to bring the car home in 11th.
