GASTON MAZZACANE
Biography Mazzacane did better than expected during his debut season in 2000, although it has to be said, these things are relative.
The Argentine has one of least impressive CVs in F1 history and owes his place among the elite to backing from South American TV network, PSN.
He began car racing in South America in 1992 when he made his debut in a saloon car championship. He made the leap to Formula 3 in the South American championship, where he did well to take five wins and finish runner-up in the title race.
He then raced in the Italian F2000 championship where he took victory in the under-23s category. A couple of seasons in Italian F3 followed before he graduated to F3000.
His best finishes in three years of F3000 were two sixth places in 1998 at Oschersleben and Silverstone. Mazzacane spent 1999 racing a Ferrari sportscar in the ISRS series.
He signed for Minardi for 2000 and drove a steady, if unspectacular, season for the Italian minnows. The highlight of his season came when he indulged in an unlikely scrap with world champion Mika Hakkinen, as the Finn fought his way through the field at Indianapolis.
For 2001 he has moved to Prost, where he will do well not to get blown away by Jean Alesi. More
