To be frank, there's not a lot to write about Kimi Raikkonen's racing career. So far it's spanned a solitary season and 23 races, making the Finn probably the least experienced F1 rookie ever.
Many seasoned racing pundits think Peter Sauber must be barmy to give a race seat to such a green driver. However, they said the same when Frank Williams gave Jenson Button his big break last year. Who's laughing now.
Raikkonen dominated last season's British Formula Renault
championship, attracting the attention of Sauber with his raw speed and consistency. They invited him to test at Mugello where he
flabbergasted the team's technical staff by lapping a mere 0.8s slower than Michael Schumacher, who was testing on the same day.
The 21-year-old Finn's performances persuaded the FIA that he wasn't going to be a liability in F1 and the sport's governing body granted him a discretionary super-licence.
He has been quick and consistent in testing and it will be fascinating to see how he stacks up against Heidfeld who has years of experience in the junior formulas after being nurtered by the McLaren Mercedes driver programme.
It's difficult to say whether he will sink or swim. Sauber are no
Williams and Button had done nearly twice as many car races as Raikkonen when he made his F1debut. Time will tell.
