Lauda wins at home
Lauda finally managed to win at home in 1984 en route to his third
title. Prost won in 1983, 1985 and 1986, while the 1987 event fell to Mansell, who banged his head on a girder when being driven to the
podium. But then Austria lost its race, the fact that the track was so far from major cities not helping in an era when corporate
entertainment had grown so important for financial survival.

Enter the A1-Ring
After much chopping and changing, and renaming as the A1-Ring, the circuit is back on the calendar. Jacques Villeneuve was the first winner at the revised venue in 1997, but newcomer Jarno Trulli stunned by leading half the race in his Prost. Hakkinen led all the way in 1998, with McLaren team-mate Coulthard fighting up the order to finish second. In 1999, though, they clashed on the first lap, dropping
Hakkinen to the tail of the field and he shone as he fought back to third as Irvine outran Coulthard.
