To prevent myself from rushing thingy's return I start by ripping out the dashboard and all the wiring behind it, next out comes all the column switches, the seats, the windscreen roll bar and seat belts,
WOW! what an improvement, now at least I have to replace all of these items and therefore stand a good chance of improved reliability provided I do a reasonable job when replacing them.
First Week:- fitting Granada column switches, I already had these in the garage so it seemed like a good idea to use them; the previous Mk1 Escort column switch only controlled the indicators, horn and dop/ main beam. Fitting it to the Escort steering clomn was childs play. I only had to weld a homemade bracket to the outer column, drill and tap 2 x m5 holes and they were ready to be wired up. Next job was fitting a new speedo cable. The existing cable had the wrong instrument fitting to match the Granada panel which I intended to fit so work was needed to source a cable. The empty windscreen channel around the scuttle top needed filling with body filler along with several holes which had been drilled through the bulkhead by the previous owner but never used. To cover these I used fibreglass mat and resin. The windsreen channel required several applications of filler so to save time I filled the channel in with bits of wood and things. BIG MISTAKE! after applying the filler and leaving it to set for several days when I came to rub it down flush with the bodywork it cracked. What a waste of effort and time. I made a mental note to make sure that I do things properly first time around. Weeks 2 to 8:- rewiring, what a chore, I have plenty of cable and connectors; that's the easy bit, but I don't have any electrical experience and after several days of getting nowhere I decide to draw my own wiring diagram. First I check the column switch connectors, then the instrument panel and finally add the extras - cigarette lighter socket, which I intend using for the radar detector power supply, fuel gauge and reversing lights.
