Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Jaguar and Benetton would all be likely to join the new series as the manufactures all have stakes in these teams.

The Kirch group has recently secured the European TV rights for the World Cup and terrestrial television channels are facing a battle to keep the rights to show the competition.

If the breakaway series did go ahead the FIA have agreed to sanction the series. FIA boss Max Mosley said: "If they do start a series,
providing their cars are safe, we would sanction it in the same way as we would sanction any other series."


F1 breakaway takes shape


Paolo Cantarella, the ringleader of the car manufacturers planning a breakaway from F1, has outlined his plans for a rival racing series.

The group of five car companies - Fiat, Mercedes, Ford, Renault and BMW - have threatened to set up a new series if German media giants Kirch manage to acquire the TV rights to the sport. They are concerned that F1 will only appear on pay-per-view TV, slashing its worldwide
audience.


Fiat supremo Cantarella, who is chairman of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), said the teams were fed up not
having a say in the running of F1 when they invested so much money in the sport.
