FORMULA ONE ... THE HISTORY
Formula 1 - like the motor car itself - has moved ahead with giant strides since the World Championship began in 1950. Not only have the cars changed out of all recognition, but the circuits, too, largely at the behest of Jackie Stewart in the 1970s, who had grown tired of seeing his contemporaries crashing with fatal consequences. However, for all the changes to the fabric of Formula 1, there is one thing that has not changed at all: the will of the drivers to win.
Think of Formula 1 and, according to your age, you will recall the great drivers such as Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss from the 1950s, Jim Clark and Jack Brabham from the 1960s, Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda from the 1970s, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost from the 1980s and Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher from the 1990s. You will all have your favourites, and will argue their undoubted merits until the cows come home, since few sports arouse as much passion as motor racing. Formula 1 is truly the battle of man versus machine at its most extreme, for not only is each driver fighting to attain the holy grail of the World Championship, but each team is also fighting for its future.
