1969 Born in Hurth-Hermuhlheim, Germany.

1983 Started racing karts.

1984 German Junior Kart Champion.

1987 German Kart Champion.


1988 Won Formula Koenig series, then was second to Mika Salo in
European FF1600.

1989 Runner-up in German Formula 3 Championship, finishing a point
behind Karl Wendlinger and equal with Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

1990 German Formula 3 Champion, also beating Mika Hakkinen to win Macau Formula 3 GP. Raced for Mercedes in World Sports Car
Championship.

1991 Won sports car race at Autopolis for Mercedes and was second in a Japanese Formula 3000 race.

Then made Formula 1 debut with Jordan, then was poached directly to join Benetton and started scoring points immediately.

1992 Stayed on with Benetton and scored first win on anniversary of his debut at the Belgian GP. Three third place finishes helped him end
season third overall.

1993 One win, in Portugal, and eight other top-three finishes helped him finish fourth overall for Benetton.         More
