DAVID COULTHARD
Biography
It is a case of now or never if David Coulthard wants to make the
transition from Formula 1 also-ran to genuine title contender.

DC seemed to have made the leap forward last season when he outpaced Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen in Britain and France. But a combination of errors and bad luck in the second half of the year saw him slip back, finishing up well adrift of F1's top-two.

For someone who has spent the vast majority of his career in the sport's best cars, Coulthard's record of nine wins is not really good enough.

Coulthard shot to prominence in 1991, finishing a close second in the British F3 championship behind Rubens Barrichello.

Two years in F3000 followed, and in 1993 Coulthard succeeded Damon Hill as Williams test driver.

The following year he was thrust into Formula 1 by the tragic death of Ayrton Senna. In difficult circumstances, Coulthard failed to make a big impression but did enough to hang on to the drive for 1995.

He made a marked improvement in his second season, scoring five pole positions and his maiden race win in Estoril.
With Jacques Villeneuve taking his place at Williams, Coulthard was forced to join McLaren.

He took the team's first wins in three years in 1997, frequently
outpacing team-mate Mika Hakkinen.More
