GIANCARLO FISICHELLA

Biography

Fisichella has reached a crossroads in his career. He has long been touted as a future world champion but it is about time he started
delivering.

He burst on to the F1 scene in 1996 with a set of confident and pacey drives in the hopelessly un-competitive Minardi. He did enough to
attract the attention of Eddie Jordan for 1997 and signed a contract with the Silverstone based team, despite Benetton owning the
long-term rights to his services.

Fisi made the biggest impression of a crop of young racers who burst on to the scene in '97. He finished third in Canada, second in Belgium and was unlucky not to win in Germany after a battle with Gerhard Berger and Michael Schumacher.

A protracted legal wrangle in the winter of '97 saw Fisi move from
Jordan to Benetton. Second places in Monaco and Montreal were the highlight of his season as Benetton slipped away badly in the second half of the year.

1999 was little better for Fisichella as Benetton again failed to give him to tools to do the job properly. Another second place in Montreal was the only podium finish in an otherwise barren season. He would have won at the Nurburgring if he hadn't spun off in the rain while attempting to push ahead on dry tyres. More
